Artificial Vertebrae

If vertebrae are destroyed by fractures, tumours or infections, they need to be replaced or repaired.

Unstable lumbar vertebra– 5 – Fracture, artificial (titanium) vertebra and internal fixation

Vertebroplasty

With vertebroplasty, fractured vertebrae are stabilized with liquid cement which is injected directly into the damaged vertebrae by means of a special capsule while undergoing a computerized tomography or an image converter control. The cement solidifies within a few minutes. Stabilization of the vertebrae and simultaneous administration of an analgetic will lead to a reduction of pain, and in many cases pain completely disappears.

Stabilization Dorsal or Ventral

Unstable fractures, as well as fractures which lead to biomechanical problems caused by a sintering process of the vertebrae due to statical disorder, can be reset in an upright position while undergoing a surgical procedure. Depending on the findings, the stabilization takes place dorsally (from behind) or ventrally (from the front) or in a combination of both –dorsoventral surgery. The vertebra is replaced partly or entirely by so-called cages. If necessary, the vertebra can be replaced by endogenous bones.

Spondylodesis (Spinal Fusion)

A spinal fusion becomes necessary in cases where vertebrae are injured or destroyed, thus affecting the stability of the spine and causing extreme pain. By connecting the affected vertebrae with stable and sound ones, the function of the spine can be restored.
